Nungou Yumthangba (ꯅꯨꯉꯧ ꯌꯨꯝꯊꯪꯕ) or Nungngou Yumthangba (ꯅꯨꯡꯉꯧ ꯌꯨꯝꯊꯪꯕ) was the founder of the Chenglei (Sarang Leishangthem) clan of the Meitei confederacy.[1][2]
Family
Nungou Yumthangba was a son of Tharang and Huimu Leima. His brothers were Lamlekshang (Hao Oiba) and Thengkoipa (Lokpa).[3] According to the Chengleiron, Nungou Yumthangba had one more brother called Lokton Atonba.[2]
Founding lineages of the Chenglei clan
Among the four brothers, Nungou Yumthangba is considered as the founder of the main line of the Chenglei (Sarang Leishangthem) clan. His descendants is believed to have formed the principal Chenglei Yek called Thangyi in Ancient Manipur.[4][2]
According to the Leithak Leikharol,[3] Pudin, and Leishangthemlon, Nungou Yumthangba's elder brother, Lamlekshang, migrated to the hills and settled there.[5][2] His descendants later became the Songbu Kabui, who now inhabit the southwestern hills of present-day Manipur.[2]
Thengkoiba (Lokpa) started the Haorok-Konthou lineage.[6]
