Pieter Willem Botha (2 January 1916 – 31 October 2006) was a South African politician. He served from 1978 to 1989. He was the last Prime Minister of the country, to 1984, when the office was abolished. After that he served as the first State President. He is commonly known as P.W. Botha, and often called Die Groot Krokodil (which translates to The Great Crocodile). When he was first elected to parliament in 1948, he was against black majority rule. In 1992, there was a referendum, whether black majority rule should be introduced. In that referendum, Botha campaigned for the No vote. In 2006, Botha died of a heart attack, aged 90.
