Perm Krai is a krai (federal territory) of Russia that came into existence on 1 December 2005 as a result of the 2004 referendum on the merger of Perm Oblast (province) and Komi–Permyak self-governing district. The city of Perm became the administrative center of the new federal subject.
Perm Krai is located in the east of the East European Plain and the western slope of the Middle Ural Mountains. The length from north to south is 645 km (401 mi); length from west to east is 417.5 km (259.4 mi).
Rivers of Perm Krai belong to the Kama River Basin, the largest tributary of the Volga River. There are more than 29,000 rivers in Perm Krai. Together they are more than 90,000 km (56,000 mi) long, but only two rivers have lengths exceeding 500 km (310 mi); the Kama (1,120 km or 700 mi) and the Chusovaya (592 km or 368 mi).
The landscape is mostly low rolling hills covered by forests and fields. The Ural Mountains are in the eastern part of Perm Krai. The highest mountain Tulysmsky Kamen (1,496 m or 4,908 ft) is in the north east of the territory.
