The eighth note (also called a quaver) is a note used in musical notation. It is 1⁄8 the duration of a whole note (semibreve), which is where it gets its name. In the [math]\displaystyle{ \frac 4 4 }[/math] time signature it has a length of 1⁄2 of a beat.
