He is the son of actors Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, and grandson of actor-director Raj Kapoor. Kapoor studied filmmaking at the School of Visual Arts and acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.[4][5] He then worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an assistant director on the 2005 movie Black. He acted for the first time in Bhansali's tragic romance Saawariya (2007). The movie did not do well with critics or at the box office.[6] Kapoor became famous in 2009 with his performances in the coming-of-age movie Wake Up Sid, the romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, and the drama Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year. His most watched movie at that time was the political drama Raajneeti (2010).

He played the role of a troubled musician in the romantic drama Rockstar (2011) and a cheerful deaf-and-mute man in the comedy-drama Barfi! (2012). He won two Filmfare Best Actor awards for these roles.[3] He acted with Deepika Padukone in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)(2013), which made him a leading Bollywood actor. Later, some of his movies did not do well, except the romance Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Kapoor played Sanjay Dutt in Rajkumar Hirani's biopic Sanju in 2018.[7] The movie was one of the highest-earning Indian movies of all time. He won another Filmfare Award for Best Actor for this role.[3] After taking a break, he became successful again with the fantasy movie Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022), the romantic comedy Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (2023), and the action drama Animal (2023). Animal made the most money[8] and won him his fourth Filmfare Best Actor award.[9]

Apart from acting in movies, Kapoor supports charities and organisations.[10] He is also the co-owner of the Indian Super League football team Mumbai City FC.[11][12] He is married to actress Alia Bhatt.[13][14] They have a daughter together.[15][16]
