Richard DeVos

Richard Marvin DeVos Sr. (March 4, 1926 – September 6, 2018) was an American businessman. He was known for being the co-founder of Amway along with Jay Van Andel (company restructured as Alticor in 2000), and owner of the Orlando Magic NBA basketball team.

In 2012, Forbes magazine listed him as the 60th richest person in the United States, and the 205th richest in the world, with an estimated net worth of $5.1 billion.[1] At one point, he was one of the 10 richest Americans.

DeVos was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He studied at Calvin College. He served in the military in World War II in the United States Army Air Corps.[2] He was married to Helen June Van Wesep from 1953 until her death in 2017.[3] Together, they had four children. His son, Dick DeVos, is married to Betsy DeVos the 11th and current United States Secretary of Education.

He was a Reformed Christian.[4]

DeVos died on September 6, 2018 from complication of an infection in Ada, Michigan at the age of 92.[5]
