Ride was formed in 1988 by Mark Gardener, Andy Bell and Laurence Colbert. The named the band 'Ride' because of the evocation of travel and after the Ride cymbal. The band was a part of the "shoegazing" scene that happened in England during the early 1990s. They broke up in 1996 because of tension in the band. After their breakup, the former members decided to work on other projects. Andy Bell would become the bassist for Oasis.

Their debut album Nowhere was ranked #74 on Pitchfork Media's list of Top 100 Albums of the 1990s[1] and was also added to the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.[2] The single "Vapour Trail" was ranked #145 on Pitchfork Media's list of Top 200 Tracks of the 90s.[3]
