James T. Kirk and his crew have to travel back in time in a Klingon space ship to save the Earth from an alien probe attempting to contact now-extinct humpback whales. The crew travel to the 20th century, in order to find the whales and take them to the 24th century, so they can answer the probe's call.

Vasquez Rocks was used as a stand-in for the alien world of Vulcan. The rocks had also appeared in TOS and many other TV shows and movies.
