Template:Infobox archaeological site

This template is designed to provide the exact coordinates and essential data for archaeological sites. The "skyline" image should be letterbox format for optimal aesthetic effect.

Usage

Note 1

This is the city that controlled the site in antiquity: e.g. Brauron in eastern Attica was controlled by Athens, Eleusis was controlled by Athens, etc.. If the site was a city, simple leave this blank.

Note 2

This is the period of greatest activity at the site in terms of construction and usage (ritual, domestic, etc). Examples of periods for most of Greece are very roughly:

  • Neolithic - 6000 to 3000 BCE
  • Cycladic - 3000 to 2000 BCE (in the Cyclades)
  • Minoan - 2700 to 1450 BCE (mostly on Crete; Early, Middle, and Late Minoan periods - EM, MM, LM)
  • Mycenean - 1650 to 1200 BCE (essentially Late Helladic - LH)
  • Sub-Mycenean - 1200 to 1100 BCE
  • Dark Age - 1100 to 900 BCE
  • Geometric - 900 to 700 BCE
  • Orientalizing - 7th century BCE
  • Archaic - 6th century BCE to 480 BCE
  • Classical - 480 to 323 BCE
  • Hellenistic - 323 to 30 BCE
  • Early Roman - 146 to 27 BCE
  • Roman Imperial - 27 BCE to 313 CE
  • Late Roman - 313 to 395 CE
  • Byzantine - 395 to 1453 CE
  • Ottoman - 1453 to 1832 CE

Each site goes through such cultural (material culture) periods at different hard dates, and the fixing of material culture changes to hard dates is constantly in flux and in dispute. The purpose of this line is to give an idea of the peak of a sites development in cultural terms rather than an exact historical date.
