Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 - 5 February 1881) was a Scottish writer, essayist, historian and social reformer. He lived most of his later life in London, England, and is sometimes also called the 'Sage of Chelsea' after the neighbourhood where he lived there.

Thomas Carlyle's house, Comely Bank Carlyle lived here between 1819 and 1821 before achieving literary success. At that time, the terrace was the last row of houses in Edinburgh before the village of Blackhall.
