Tribes of Israel

Location of the Israelite tribes

The Israelites were divided into twelve tribes, according to the twelve sons of the Biblical patriarch, Jacob:

1. Asher
2. Benjamin
3. Dan
4. Gad
5. Issachar
6. Joseph
7. Judah
8. Levi
9. Naphtali
10. Reuben
11. Simeon
12. Zebulun

The Land of Israel was divided among those tribes, but there were a few exceptions:

• The tribe of Levi got no land but had to do temple duties.
• The tribe of Joseph was divided into two sub tribes:
  • Ephraim
  • Manasseh
