  • Zakraoui is a Berber name from the verb Zakraw (ⵣⴽⵔⴰⵡ) or Azakraw (ⴰⵣⴽⵔⴰⵡ), meaning “Activist”, in the imperative gives “Zkar (ⵣⴽⴻⵔ)”. It is a word very close to the word “Sakraw (ⵙⴽⵔⴰⵡ)” or “Asakraw (ⴰⵙⴽⵔⴰⵡ)”, which means “To do”: which in the imperative gives “Skar (ⵙⴽⴻⵔ)”.
  • The Izkrawiyen or Zkara (plural of Zakraoui), an Berber and Arabized Berber tribe originating from eastern Morocco (Middle Atlas), more precisely from the province of Oujda-Angad, around Mestferki). The name of this tribe comes from the Berber word Zakraw (ⵣⴽⵔⴰⵡ), which means “Activist”. The imperative “Zkar (ⵣⴽⴻⵔ)”, became “Zkara”, in an Arabized plural form. The identity of this tribe is somewhat controversial in Morocco due to rumors that the Zkara are not Muslims and are even anti-Muslim, based on the words of the French author Auguste Mouliéras. The Zkara had rivalries with neighboring Arab tribes before French colonization, but are indeed a Muslim Berber tribe.
