¡Que te vote Txapote!
¡Que te vote Txapote![1] (English: Let Txapote vote for you!) is a popular phrase used by right-wing politics in Spain[2] since 2023. It attacks Pedro Sánchez as Prime Minister of Spain.[3] It was popularized by Chema de la Cierva.[4]
Txapote is Francisco Javier García Gaztelu, born in Galdácano, Vizcaya, Spain on February 12, 1966. He is a Spanish terrorist, who belonged to ETA. He was convicted by the courts for his participation in various crimes, such as the murders of several Basque politicians.[5]
History
On September 3, Pedro Sánchez was walking through the Pino Montano neighborhood in Seville. It was the first of El Gobierno de la Gente campaign made by Spanish Socialist Workers' Party to come near citizens.[6] On that moment many members of the Solidarity union, linked to Vox, interrupted him, and, in the background, a middle-aged man with a white shirt with short sleeves, and a banner that read Que te vote Txapote.[7]
Background
Francisco Javier García Gaztelu
Francisco Javier García Gaztelu, also known as Txapote, was a member of ETA, an armed group, and murdered Fernando Buesa. Buesa was member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party political party in Basque Country and served as a spokesperson for the party in the regional parliament.[8][9]
Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and Euskal Herria Bildu
Some people have been critic with the partnership between the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and Euskal Herria Bildu because Bildu is seen as a political extension of ETA.[10] In the past, ETA killed politicians and innocent people. In this political conflict, the names of both innocent individuals and terrorists are being used as political arguments.[11]
Consuelo Ordóñez, the president of the Collective of Victims of Terrorism and sister of Gregorio Ordóñez, politician from the People's Party, criticized Isabel Díaz Ayuso on social media for her inappropriate use of the phrase.[12]

In January 2023, during a live broadcast of the RTVE program called Hablando Claro, which was covering news in the town of Cazalegas in Toledo, Spain, a man called Chema de la Cierva was interviewed. The local council had hired a private company to install a radar system for enforcing traffic fines due to the absence of municipal police. Instead of answering the journalist's questions, Chema de la Cierva repeatedly attacked Pedro Sánchez by saying "¡Que te vote Txapote!"[13] Chema is the son of Ricardo de la Cierva, a former Minister of Culture under Adolfo Suárez and a historian associated with the Franco regime.[14]
Popular uses
The viral phrase "Que te vote Txapote!" appeared on Philippine television.[16] On February 2023, Isabel Díaz Ayuso said the phrase at the Assembly of Madrid.[17] On 3 February 2023, at same program as Chema de la Cierva, at the end of an interview with a TikTok personality, a ¡Que te vote Txapote! was heard.[18][19] Caminando Juntos motto is "que España salga a flote", which rhymes with the popular "Que te vote Txapote".[20] A kid shouted the phrase at Picassent (Valencia).[21] @QueTvoteTxapote is a popular Twitter account that spread the phrase.[22]
