2007 enlargement of the European Union

The 2007 enlargement of the European Union joined Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union. It happened on 1 January 2007. The Treaty of Accession was signed on April 25, 2005 at Luxembourg, Neumünster Abbey. It was the seventh time the Union accepted new members.

Membership

Since 1989, Bulgaria and Romania wanted to be a part of the European Union (EU)[1] and put forward to become members in 1995.[2]

During the 2000s, Bulgaria and Romania made changes, such as improving their democratic system, human rights acts, freedom of speech acts, economy and laws.
