Attacks on US bases during the Gaza war

Beginning on October 17, 2023, Iran-backed militias launched over 170 coordinated attacks on U.S. military bases and assets in Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, in response to U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza war.[1][2][3]

Al-Asad air base

On October 17, 2023, during the Gaza war, Iraqi militants attempted a drone strike on the U.S. al-Asad Airbase in northern Iraq. The attack was intercepted. The next day, a false alarm at the base led to the death of a civilian contractor who suffered a heart attack. On October 20, the U.S. ordered all non-essential staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Erbil.

On November 20, a ballistic missile hit the base, injuring eight U.S. and coalition soldiers and causing minor damage.

On January 20, 2024, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for a large missile attack on the base. Dozens of missiles injured several U.S. troops and one Iraqi soldier. The attack occurred at 6:30 p.m. Baghdad time. The U.S. responded with over 15 Patriot missiles to defend the base.[4][5][6]
