Overview
It was the third time that the country has hosted the contest, after 1967 and 2015, as well as the third time the contest was held in Vienna. In December 2025, the EBU announced that 35 countries would participate in the 2026 contest. Bulgaria returned for the first time since 2022, Romania returned for the first time since 2023, and Moldova returned for the first time since 2024. Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain, all countries that participated the previous year, boycotted in protest against the inclusion of Israel in the context of the Gaza war. This made it the largest boycott in the contest's history. Bulgaria won the contest for the first time in their history.
