The Flag of the Philippines has two horizontal bands colored royal blue and scarlet. It also has a triangle on its left side with an 8-rayed sun and three stars. The three stars symbolizes the archipelago's three principal islands, Luzon, Panay Island, and Mindanao. The 8 rays of the sun of the flag symbolizes the provinces of Tarlac, Cavite, Bulacan , Pampanga, Nueva Ecija,Laguna, manila and Batangas. The latter group were the first to be placed under Martial Law by Spain when the Philippine Revolution began. The flag of the Philippines can be also hoisted upside-down to show that the country is at war. The flag was designed by Emilio Aguinaldo.
