Grande école

Grandes écoles are specialized universities in France. Each grande école only teaches a very limited number of subjects. Unlike the other universities in France, the grandes écoles can pick the students they admit. These students have to follow special courses and tests before they are admitted. The grandes écoles award degrees that correspond to a master's degree; they do not award bachelor's degrees. There is no exhaustive list, but in general, there are the following types of grandes écoles, along with some of the representative schools in each category:

Sciences: École normale supérieure
Engineering: École polytechnique, École centrale Paris, Mines ParisTech, Institut National des Sciences Appliquées
Aviation: École nationale de l'aviation civile, Institut polytechnique des sciences avancées
Politics and public administration: Institut d'études politiques de Paris, École nationale d'administration
Business: École des hautes études commerciales de Paris, Emlyon Business School
Military: École Navale, École de l'Air
Veterinary:, such as the École nationale vétérinaire d'Alfort
Archival science: École nationale des chartes
