Greater London is a conurbation and one of the counties made from merging London proper with many smaller villages and towns. Together with the City of London, they form Greater London's administrative districts. In order to avoid confusion with the City of London, "Greater London" is often used to mean the whole modern urban area centred on the City of London, and not just the City of London itself. When most people say London, they are referring to Greater London.

The county is made of all of London except the City of London. The London region, the same area as London, is made up of both Greater London and the City of London.
