Hedge school
Hedge schools were small unofficial schools in Ireland that existed during the 18th and the 19th centuries. They were illegal schools that were designed to give primary education to children of the Catholic and the Presbyterian faiths. At the time, the laws allowed schools only for people of the Anglican faith.[1]
In the Irish language, the schools were called scoil chois claíl, scoil ghairid or scoil scairte.[2]
