iOS 4 is the fourth major version of Apple's iOS mobile operating system that runs on the iPhone and iPod Touch. It was released on June 21, 2010, and was the first version to be simply named "iOS". It was the first version of iOS to drop support for some devices and also the first version that iPod Touch users did not have to pay for.

The iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (2nd generation) can't have a wallpaper or multitasking, while the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch have them. The first generation iPhone and iPod Touch cannot run iOS 4.

iOS 4.2.1, which was released on November 22, 2010, added support for the iPad. It was also the last version to support the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (2nd generation, MB and MC models).[1]

When the CDMA iPhone 4 for Verizon Wireless was released, it used a branch of iOS. iOS 4.2 continued for the CDMA iPhone 4, while iOS 4.3 was released for all other devices.[2]
