Katsunari Miyai

Katsunari Miyai (宮井 勝成code: ja is deprecated , Miyai Katsunari, 14 April 1926 – 7 August 2020) was a Japanese baseball manager. He was the manager of the baseball clubs of Waseda Jitsugyo and Chuo University. He was the only person to manage the winning teams of a Kōshien tournament and the Meiji Jingu Baseball Tournament.

Early life and career

He was from Suginami, Tokyo. He studied at Waseda Jitsugyo and Chuo University. He played in the Japanese High School Baseball Invitational Tournament in 1941. He was an outfielder for the Chuo University Baseball Team.

In 1954, he became the baseball coach of his alma mater Waseda Jitsugyo. He became the manager in 1955. In 1957, the team won the 29th Japanese High School Baseball Invitational Tournament. From 1959 to 1993, he was the manager of the Chuo University Baseball Team. The team won one Meiji Jingu Baseball Tournament in 1974 and three Japan National Collegiate Baseball Championships in 1972, 1973, and 1979. They also won eight Tohto University Baseball League championships. He was the team's general manager from 1994 until his death.

He died in Mitaka, Tokyo of lung cancer on 7 August 2020, aged 94.

His daughter Fumiko (芙美子code: ja is deprecated ) married baseball player Toshimitsu Suetsugu.
