M Alimullah Miyan (এম আলিমউল্যা মিয়ান) was a Bangladeshi academic. He started the first private university in Bangladesh, the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology (IUBAT). He is known as a pioneer of private universities in the country.[1][2]

Early life

Miyan was born on 15 February 1942 in Kailine, Comilla District, Bangladesh. He completed his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Dhaka in 1962 and 1963. Later, he earned an MBA from Indiana University in 1968 and a PhD from Manchester Business School in 1976.[2]

Career

Miyan was a professor at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) at the University of Dhaka. He also founded the Centre for Population Management and Research (CPMR) and served as its first chairman.[2][3]

In 1991, he founded IUBAT, the first private university in Bangladesh, and became its Vice-Chancellor in 1994.[2][3][4] Miyan worked to improve private education in Bangladesh. He was involved with many organizations, such as the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia and the International Society for Labour Law and Social Security.[5] Miyan also worked on organic farming, launching the Bangladeshi chapter of World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms in 2010. He opposed certain government policies about private universities, such as the Private University Ordinance-2008.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Legacy

Miyan passed away on 10 May 2017 in Dhaka. To honor him, IUBAT created scholarships for students from rural areas through its Knowledge-Based Area Development (KBAD) program. The M Alimullah Miyan Research Institute was opened in 2019 at IUBAT to support research.[5][14][15][16]
