Early life

Pietro Barbo was born in Venice. He was a nephew of Pope Eugene IV.[2]

Barbo became a cardinal in 1440.[3] He was sometimes called the Venetian cardinal.[2]

Barbo was elected Pope on 30 August 1464;[2] and he chose to be called Paul II.

Pope Paul was involved in Italian and European political disputes.[2]

The Cardinals' right to wear the red biretta was granted by Paul II.[4]
