The office of president was established upon the ratification of the Constitution of 1819, by the Congress of Angostura, convened in December 1819, when Colombia was "la Gran Colombia". The first president, General Simón Bolívar,[1] took office in 1819. His position, initially self-proclaimed, was ratified by Congress.

The current president of the Republic of Colombia is Gustavo Petro, who took office on 7 August 2022.

Living former presidents

As of 30 August 2024, there are five living former presidents:

The most recent death of a former president was that of Belisario Betancur (1982–1986) on 6 December 2018; he was 95 years old.[2]
