Plot

A year after the events of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke Skywalker continues his training as a Jedi and rescues Han Solo from crime lord Jabba The Hutt, who is killed by Princess Leia. During the scuffle, bounty hunter Boba Fett is unwittingly dispatched by Han, who damages his jetpack and causes him to fall into a monstrous pit known as the Sarlacc. After the rescue, the rebels travel to the forest planet Endor to stop the Galactic Empire from building a second Death Star.

Luke discovers that Leia is his sister, after a conversation with the Force ghost of Ben. He lets himself be captured by the Empire, allowing he and Darth Vader to have their first proper conversation. Vader reveals that Emperor Palpatine intends on turning Luke over to the Dark Side, to which Luke strongly retorts, insisting that the man Vader once was is still buried deep within him. Vader warns Luke that he does not know the power of the Dark Side and is compelled to obey his master's bidding, but Luke holds strong to his belief that his father can be redeemed.

Brought before Emperor Palpatine, Luke is goaded by him into killing him, further threatening his friends. Enraged, Luke swings his lightsaber at Palpatine, only to be blocked by Vader. The pair fight, and after a viscious battle, Luke gains the upper hand, but he is struck down by Palpatine using powerful Force lightning. Palpatine intensifies the lightning and tortures Luke, as a conflicted Vader looks on. Deciding to save his son, Vader betrays Palpatine and throws him down a deep shaft of the Death Star, redeeming himself and fulfilling the prophecy of the Chosen One.

As the main reactor of the Death Star overloads, Luke helps a severely injured Vader out to the hangar, as Imperial forces evacuate the Death Star. Vader asks Luke to unmask him, and after doing so, an injured Anakin Skywalker is revealed. The former Sith lord thanks his son for his belief in the good within him, despite Luke still wanting to save him. After giving his last words intended for both Luke and Leia, Anakin dies. Luke leaves the space station with his father's body and the Death Star explodes, much to the celebration of the Rebels.

The Galactic Empire soon falls as a result and is dismantled, giving rise to the New Republic, a reformed version of the Galactic Republic.

On Endor, Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca, Lando, and the native Ewoks all celebrate the fall of the Empire and their newfound freedom. Nearby, the Force ghosts of Yoda, Ben, and Anakin look on.

Civilisations across the universe rejoice in their own cultural parades, celebrating the bravery of the Rebel Alliance. After centuries of war, corruption, betrayal, and fighting amongst the Jedi and the Sith, peace is finally restored across the galaxy.
