Saho people

The Saho are an ethnic group in the Horn of Africa. They live mainly in Eritrea.

Location

They live in Debub, Eritrea and Irob (woreda), Ethiopia. Foro and Ghinda are towns they live in.

Clothing and adornment

Saho women wear brightly colored dresses, with scarves covering their head. Slashing the cheeks slightly was done at certain times during marriage. Saho men wear long white tunics, with dark vests. Saho dresses were often in vivid colours. Jewellery was crafted by local professionals. Women decorate their hair using beaded diadems.

Society

Saho society was highly patriarchal. The roles of grandfather and father were highly respected. Disputes were settled in clan assemblies (rahbe) led by chosen mediators (madarre).

Lifestyle

Beekeeping was done. The Saho did Animal husbandry, as well as some farming. They are agro-pastoralist peoples. The word Saho means "nomad" in the Saho language.
