Biography

Alexander was born on December 13, 1975 in Leningrad.[3] He has been interested in music since childhood, participated in school and college rock bands.[4]

In 1995 he graduated from school with advanced study of German language and then entered St. Petersburg State Institute of Culture.[5] Combining his studies at the institute, he began to study music at the same time.[6]

Career

First studio album

He started actively practicing music in 2004.[7] In 2005 he released his first album "Возвращение" on the BOMBA PITER label, which included songs on poems by poets Gumilev, Mandelstam and G. Ivanov. The musician's debut work was favorably received by both the public and critics.[8]

Anatoly Gunitsky about the studio album "Return":

The record "Return [Vetrov]" features songs written to poems by such poets as Osip Mandelstam, Nikolai Gumilev and Georgy Ivanov - it turned out that their wonderful poetry sounds quite harmoniously in Alexander Vetrov's songs and fits perfectly into the texture of soft acoustic rock....."

Having chosen a musical project as a form of existence,[9] the artist could think of nothing better than to give it his own name.[4] Inviting a variety of musicians to collaborate, Vetrov started giving concerts in clubs in St. Petersburg and Moscow,[10] gradually expanding the geography of trips and performances.[11][12]

In 2006 Vetrov presented the program "Счастья нет", in 2007 "Облака"[13],  and "Кривая музыка"[14], followed by "Вино на молоко" (2008), and "Необходим как воздух" (2009).[1]

Among the musicians with whom Vetrov has collaborated are Mark Bomstein ("Jungle"), Alexander Mishukov ("People's Militia"), Oleg Tsybin, Alexei Zubarev ("Rainy Season", "Aquarium"), Mikhail Kolovsky ("AuktsYon"), Nikolai Rubanov ("AuktsYon"), Kirill Miller and many others.[1]

Over the course of five years, Project Vetrov passes through all stages of development until its dissolution[15], and ceases to exist in 2010.[16][17]

Vetrov's project was formed and lived in difficult times for music and creativity, despite this two distinctive features of the group are remembered by the public a high level of lyrics along with memorable clear melodies, complete freedom of improvisation and rock 'n' roll drive

In the same year, 2010, Vetrov presents a solo program "Asina songs". In 2011, three studio albums are released at once[18], two of which are concert versions of programs "Вино на молоко" and "Необходимо как воздух"[19] and "Кривая музыка".[20][21]

In 2012, Vetrov recorded an album of songs on Georgy Ivanov's poems "Лёд" at the St. Petersburg recording studio Gramzapisi[22]:

I have a special love for the poet Georgy Ivanov, his poems are very close and understandable to me, and I return to his work again and again. Like no one else, he does not depend on the running of time. The world, which he carried in himself and gave to readers in his poems, was relevant yesterday, fully breathes today and will live tomorrow, the language he uses to describe this world is quite simple, flexible, accurate and accessible to people, the word of his poems has a magical beauty and power

The early 2010s saw a period of close cooperation between Sasha Vetrov and bass guitarist Pavel Borisov, which resulted in the acoustic album "Февраль" recorded in 2014.[23]

In the second half of 2010 Vetrov presented the programs "Тихое место" (2015), "Один день" (2016), "Бояться и ненавидеть" (2019). In 2019 together with Savva Airus-Shulepov, Kirill Miller and Alexei Zubarev presented the program "Зелёная звезда", which included songs on poems by G. Ivanov, G. Adamovich and V. Khodasevich.

In 2017, theater and film actor, musician Roman Nikitin assembled the group "кРоме того". The basis of the musical material of the collective included songs by Sasha Vetrov. In 2021, the musicians released the CD "Это подозрительно".

In 2019, a book of Alexander's lyrics, St. Petersburg's Rainbow Publishing House, published a book of Alexander's song lyrics entitled "Глупости". In 2020, together with composer Vladimir Kirasirov, he created the chamber opera "Доротея".[4]

In 2023, the electro-industrial project "КАА", which included Sasha Vetrov and DDT musicians Alyona Romanova and Konstantin Shumailov, released the album "Самый тихий". According to Alyona Romanova the first experiments in this direction began back in 2013, when she got acquainted with Sasha Vetrov's songs and tried to perform one of them.

Vetrov is one of the authors who have their own distinct charisma. He himself and most of the musicians who played in "Project" and perform with it today "came out" of Russian rock, but Vetrov's songs can hardly be attributed to this popular genre. In the lyrics of the author one can feel the influence of Silver Age poetry, in the music of the band there are quite a lot of improvisational moments. Vetrov's work makes an indelible impression on the listener, critics speak about him as a mature, established author.
