Swedesboro, New Jersey
Swedesboro is a borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of 2010, it had a population of 2,584 inhabitants and a population density of 1,292 people per km².
Swedesboro was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 9, 1902, from portions of Woolwich Township. The borough was named for its early settlers originally from the colony of New Sweden.
History
Swedesboro was, at the side of Bridgeport, one of only two settlements in what is now new Jersey in the colony of New Sweden. The oldest existing logging cottage in the United States was built by Antti Niilonpoika (Anthony Neilson/Nelson) in Swedesboro. It is registered as a historic monument, which is also the Church of Trinity Church. This church was founded as a Swedish Lutheran Church 1703; The current building was erected 1784.
The cemetery at the church is the burial ground of the governor of New Jersey Charles C. Stratton and Congressman Benjamin Franklin Howey, among other notable people.
Demographics
According to the 2000 American Census, its population was of 2055 inhabitants. In 2006, a population of 2043 was estimated, a decrease of 12 (-0.6%). Whites are the major ethnic group, numbering about 69.81% of Swedesboro's total population in 2010.
