Template:Infobox school

Documentation icon Template documentation[view] [edit] [history] [purge]

Purpose

{{Infobox school}} can be used for adding at-a-glance comparative information to articles about schools, other than universities or colleges. (See: {{Infobox university}} and related infobox templates for higher-education facilities.) Examples of use for this template would include primary and secondary schools.

Usage

To add an empty infobox with all options and editor-only comments with usage tips, you can subst Template:ISCL. To do this, type {{subst:ISCL}}, save the edit, and then on a subsequent edit fill in the data after the equals signs for those lines you are ready to use. Lines that are left blank will be ignored.

Map and coordinates

It's usually not necessary to use the coordinates= parameter.

  • The latitude and longitude of the building may be specified:
    • in decimal degrees, using latitude= and longitude= OR
    • in degrees/minutes/seconds, using latd=, latm=, lats=, latNS=, longd=, longm=, longs=, and longEW=.
  • To display coordinates at the top of the page, set coordinates_display= to any non-blank value. Otherwise coordinates will appear in the infobox only.
  • The ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 or ISO 3166-2 region code is specified using the iso_region= parameter.

One advantage of omitting the coordinates= parameter is that you can display a {{Location map}} without duplicating coordinates.

{{Infobox school
...
| coordinates = <!-- Template {{Coord}} if map is not used; empty if map is displayed. -->
| coordinates_display = <!-- non-blank to display coordinates at the top of the page. -->
| iso_region          = <!-- [[ISO 3166-1 alpha-2]] or [[ISO 3166-2]] region code -->
| pushpin_map         = <!-- Name of the Location map -->
| pushpin_label       = <!-- override the default label (default is name or native_name) -->
| pushpin_label_position = <!-- override the default label position -->
| pushpin_map_alt = <!-- Alternative map file name (changes background map, border coordinates are determined based on the map name); this is only recommended for use in templates. -->
| map_caption = <!-- ''map caption''; for no caption enter "map_caption="; if the parameter is omitted then the caption will be "Marker text (location map name)" -->
...
}}
Parameters to specify coordinates in degrees, minutes, and seconds of arc:
{{Infobox school
...
| latd   = <!-- ''latitude'' degrees -->
| latm   = <!-- ''latitude'' minutes -->
| lats   = <!-- ''latitude'' seconds -->
| latNS  = <!-- latitude: S=south, N=north (default) -->
| longd  = <!-- ''longitude'' degrees -->
| longm  = <!-- ''longitude'' minutes -->
| longs  = <!-- ''longitude'' seconds -->
| longEW = <!-- longitude: W=west, E=east (default) -->
...
}}
Parameters to specify coordinates in decimal degrees:
{{Infobox school
...
| latitude = <!-- ''latitude'' (decimal format; enter negative numbers for southern latitude) -->
| longitude = <!-- ''longitude'' (decimal format; enter negative numbers for western longitude) -->
...
}}

Note: coordinates in decimal degrees are sensitive to extra whitespace in the parameters:

  • Incorrect: | longitude = - 123.45
  • Correct: | longitude = -123.45

Microformat

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the place-name and location parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia, or via a browser tool operated by a person, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. Within the hCard is a Geo microformat, which additionally makes the coordinates (latitude & longitude) parsable, so that they can be, say, looked up on a map, or downloaded to a GPS unit. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

Sub-templates

If the place or venue has "established", "founded", "opened" or similar dates, use {{start date}} for the earliest of those dates unless the date is before 1583 CE.

If it has a URL, use {{URL}}.

Please do not remove instances of these sub-templates.

Classes

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • agent
  • category
  • county-name
  • extended-address
  • fn
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • region
  • street-address
  • uid
  • url
  • vcard

Geo is produced by calling {{coord}}, and uses HTML classes:

  • geo
  • latitude
  • longitude

Please do not rename or remove these classes nor collapse nested elements which use them.

Precision

When giving coordinates, please use an appropriate level of precision. Do not use {{coord}}'s |name= parameter.
