userbox

I'm a roman-catholic, but I really like your HaShaem userbox and think it's really cool. Could I use it in my userpage? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:01, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Of course! It was made by StevenJ81, and the page to transclude it from is here. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:03, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Does it work on meta and en-wiki? I get a redlink there --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:08, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
On meta it's {{Userpage-HaShem}}. Not sure about enwiki, I don't have a local userpage there. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:10, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

How did you get the HaShem userbox to line up with the babel? on meta-wiki my HaShem userbox is smaller than the babel userboxes --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:39, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Thegooduser, is it okay if I edit your userpage on meta to try and fix it? Vermont (talk) 16:40, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes you can, thanks! --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:41, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
Thegooduser, I've messed around with it a bit in previews and couldn't find a way to change it. On my userpage on Meta, you can see that is very slightly smaller than the Babel ones, but because there's a handful of other userboxes there it's less noticeable. I have edited the Babel box on your userpage to remove the unnecessary duplicate headers; if you wanted those, please undo my edit. Best, Vermont (talk) 16:45, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Just realised your userbox on your userpage are same size as babel ones, does each language babel have different size? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 17:02, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure; I assume they are the same size. Vermont (talk) 17:16, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
I never knew you could speak russian until you recently added the babel userboxes. Oh and if a user is making personal attacks in non-artcle space, do I just not revert it and wait till they are blocked to revert? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 17:18, 22 May 2020 (UTC)
It is usually best not to engage in revert wars with LTAs, yes, and to wait until they're blocked. In my view, an acceptable place to revert them is mainspace, especially if it is very bad vandalism, because we don't want readers to see it. Vermont (talk) 17:19, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

I program myself to only revert them once in non-article space, is one time bad? should I just ignore it and not revert it anytimes? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 17:21, 22 May 2020 (UTC)

Just...it really doesn't matter that much. When you see an LTA making a lot of edits, report them to WP:VIP, and come onto IRC and ping the admins there with "!admin" if no one blocks them after a few minutes. If they're making very disruptive edits to articles, it may be best to revert them. It's not as though reverting them elsewhere or not reverting them elsewhere is inherently bad. question

how do you see un-watchlisted pages? is it a separate watchlist you get? just wondering --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:27, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand your question. Could you clarify what you mean by how I see un-watchlisted pages? Vermont (talk) 02:56, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
It says on wp:Administrators "they can see pages that are not on anyone's watchlist" --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:58, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Oh. To be honest I have no idea what that refers to. Vermont (talk) 03:01, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
Found it! It refers to a list that only sysops can access of pages no one has on their watchlist. Presumably it's to be used to monitor those pages, as no editors would see the changes in their respective watchlists. Vermont (talk) 03:05, 10 May 2020 (UTC)
(edit conflict) It would be here, most likely -- not being an admin, I cannot see it, but I see the equivalent page at en:. Antandrus (talk) 03:06, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

nuke

what does nuke edits mean? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:24, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Means to delete the page in general. But if you are referring to the specific wiki command it means delete all recent pages created by a user. (or a selection of them) -Djsasso (talk) 16:29, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Djsasso, so it is like REVDEL? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:34, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Not really. Special:Nuke simply deletes a user's created pages as a group rather than doing it individually. For page-creating vandals, it makes cleaning them up a lot easier. Vermont (talk) 16:35, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Can I ask oshwah on en wikipedia? --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 17:02, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
He is an admin there, so he'd be a person to ask. Vermont (talk) 17:02, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Thegooduser - Special:Nuke is a tool available to administrators that accepts the username of an account, and pulls a list of all pages that the account has created, allowing the admin to select multiple (or all) pages from that list and delete them all at once. This is useful to quickly and easily delete pages by someone who performed a bunch of page-creation vandalism or abuse as opposed to having to delete each page manually and one-by-one. In your case, you'll just want to request that an admin delete those archive pages; they can choose to use that tool if they feel that it'll make the process easier. Whether or not they do so won't matter and the end result is no different; the pages will get deleted. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:39, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

usera vs usera~simplewiki

why are there some usernames like this?--Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:17, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Usernames used to be specific to the wiki you were on. So someone might have the name "Joe" on English and another person might have "Joe" on Simple English. Eventually they decided to make it so everyone had the same name on every wiki. So in the cases where there were conflicts, the person who had what we call the SUL (basically the name on more than one wiki) won out and got to have the name on every wiki and individuals who only had the name on a single wiki were moved to names like that until they could decide on a new username. And some people of course no longer edit so their username has remained that way. -Djsasso (talk) 16:28, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Fascinating. Strange to think of Project Wiki as old enough to have history but I guess it is. Darkfrog24 (talk) 16:33, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
A while ago accounts only existed on one wiki and connections from one to another were less solidified than they are now. When SUL/CentralAuth was implemented, a bot went around to ensure that global accounts could be created by renaming accounts on local projects. If more than one account existed for a given username, for example if there was another User:Vermont on the Swedish Wikipedia, it'd be impossible to make them into one global account of course and merging them is not possible either as you don't know if they're the same person, so they were renamed to [username]~[language][project]. After that a lot of the accounts were renamed/merged/otherwise moved around to get it clear, as it is now. Most users still with that haven't edited in a while, as they haven't had their account renamed yet. Djsasso, as written above, knows more about the specifics of the renaming as he was around then; I started editing in April 2016. Vermont (talk) 16:35, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
I can't imagine having seperate accounts for each wiki, I wonder if Oshwah ever had this problem run into him --Thegooduser Let's Talk! :) 🍁 16:36, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
Yeah what I wrote was a very simplified version. It was a multi-step process. At first they were all separate accounts for each wiki. Then one year they created the SUL and you could claim the SUL if you choose to but you weren't required to. But once a person claimed the SUL then other people could no longer create accounts on other languages with the same name. But those that already existed remained grandfathered. Then another year they did as I mentioned above and decided to give the name on every wiki to whomever had the SUL. At which point the above happened. Those renamed could ask for accounts they had on multiple wikis under different names be merged into a new SUL with a new name if I recall correctly, but since I had my SUL I don't remember all of how that happened. -Djsasso (talk) 17:31, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
And though you may think "Vermont" would have been taken as a SUL relatively early, I usurped it in early 2018 from a long-term abuser on svwikipedia, so I didn't have to deal with any SUL issues either. Vermont (talk) 20:00, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

User Pages

I have no idea what you are talking about. I can’t do as you ask if you don’t provide any details of what I have done, apart from "editing user pages". Grady240105 (talk) 11:04, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Grady240105! The edit you made here is the proper way to contact me, on my User talk page. You can see that by noticing "User talk:Vermont" as the page title. The edits you made trying to contact SithJarJar666 were made on their User page, not their User talk page. The former is where a user can describe/introduce themselves, and the latter is for communication with other editors. As such, if you want to contact an editor, please use their User talk page. As well as typing it directly in the search bar, you can also press the "Talk" tab, if you are on their user page, to go to their user talk page. I hope this clears up any confusion.Β :-) Vermont (talk) 12:06, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

I do already know how to do it, I just didn’t realize that it wasn’t the talk page because I didn’t notice the title of "user page" and the layout looked similar to a talk page. Thanks for informing me though. Grady240105 (talk) 12:16, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Great! Happy editing, Vermont (talk) 12:19, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Vandalism at African Americans

I saw that you reverted one case of vandalism at African Americans. After that, I reverted two more cases, so it's three cases in less than 24 hours (diff of the last one). I gave that user uw-vandalism3, don't know if something more should be done. --Rsk6400 (talk) 11:11, 23 August 2020 (UTC)

IP (153.107.48.106) blocked

Hi, Vermont. I just wanted to ask you, why was 153.107.48.106 blocked? (That was one of my former IPs, and I see nothing wrong in the contributions list.) The edits remaining there are just my previous edits as an IP user.

I never intended to vandalise the Simple English Wikipedia, nor have I ever done.

Sorry for the inconvienence, I just wanted to know what vandalism came from the user and why they are blocked.

Kind regards,

Commuter3 (talk) 08:27, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

Commuter3, hello! Thank you for asking me about this. The IP range 153.107.0.0/16, which 153.107.48.106 falls under, has seen significant and continued vandalism from the range. That is typical from large education-related ranges, as this one is, and unfortunately unblocking the range would mean permitting the vandalism to continue. When I made the block, I noticed that there were few to no constructive edits from the range. What I did not do, however, and what I probably should have done, is check the range for collateral prior to blocking. For now, at least, I'm in favor of keeping the 6-month block due to the vandalism. It is also anon-only, meaning that accounts are unaffected. Best regards, Vermont (talk) 16:20, 16 October 2020 (UTC)
Vermont, I think I understand. That IP is used by the DoE of NSW, probably by an annoying student who wanted to vandalise subjects on NSW and the whole of Australia. (I changed my IP to be able to edit, so it doesn't really matter now anymore unless I'm connected to their network.)
Best regards,
Commuter3 (talk) 20:52, 16 October 2020 (UTC)

What account? Vermont (talk) 15:41, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
I think they meant User:TheBlankSlate which then this IP is local block / global lock evading (most probably) (talk page stalker) . Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 15:55, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Seems so, thank's for identifying it Camouflaged Mirage. I had searched for theblankslate but, for some reason, didn't think to capitalize T, B, and S. Best, Vermont (talk) 16:47, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
You could have still found my account without capitalising the t, b or the s. 92.3.170.247 (talk) 15:34, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
Yep. Anyways, block and lock evasion, so I've blocked this IP. Vermont (talk) 15:37, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Question About A Recent Block

Hello. Thank you for blocking Fdaichan. But can I ask what the user has previously done, since you put the reason for the block as "Long-Term Abuse"? Thanks, and have a great day. ShadowBallX2 (talk) 21:03, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

ShadowBallX2, they have been vandalizing for a while under many different accounts, hence "long-term abuse". Hope this helps. Best, Vermont (talk) 21:24, 5 November 2020 (UTC)

Global Rollback

Hi. Do I meet the criteria for global rollback? --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:32, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Hello! I do not see much of a need for you having it, considering the frequency of you reverting vandalism cross-wiki. Undo should work well for now, and there's some scripts you could add to your global.js to make it easier if you find yourself reverting vandals often on projects where you dont have rollback. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:36, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Yea, If there's a way to get twinkle automatically on all projects then I don't need global rollback, as you can see, I don't use rollback much here because I don't have a need for it, because I have twinkle, The only reason I use it (rollback) is to mass revert edits, shall a vandalbot come in place, and to use Huggle. I really don't like getting too many user rights because I feel bad that people may think I'm hat collecting, and I am not obviously. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:39, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Twinkle's full functionality is very complicated, and thus only on a handful of wikis (thankfully simple has it), though there's a few global scripts out there. I recommend meta:User:Xiplus/TwinkleGlobal. This script has some other very useful features as well as simply reverting. Best, Vermont (talk) 02:43, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Vermont! Also I use a dark theme vector skin here, If I copy the script into my global common css, it will be dark theme on all projects right? --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:45, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
I'm not sure, unfortunately. My expertise is in using the scripts, not writing/reading them, haha. Only one way to find out for sure, I suppose. Vermont (talk) 02:47, 7 December 2020 (UTC)
On EN Wiki I have a dark theme script, but None of my scripts work there on Firefox for some reason... By the way, once you use dark theme, you won't need to burn your eyes anymore ;) --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 02:50, 7 December 2020 (UTC)

Blocked (April Fools)

  • You have been blocked for a period of 1,000,000 Buzzlightyears for not reading this comment, once the block has expired 'finished' you will be allow to edit again. If you think that LEDs are the reason you have been blocked, you may (try to beat the LED bulb) appeal by the template {{unblock|incandescent lightbulb goes here}}. This sentence makes no sense, neither should the block, because APRIL FOOLS!;-) --Tsugaru Let's Talk!Β :) 🍁 00:27, 1 April 2021 (UTC)
