Volzhsky, Volgograd Oblast

Volzhsky (Russian: Волжский, IPA: [ˈvolʂskʲɪj]) is an industrial town in Volgograd Oblast, Russia. It is on the east bank of the Volga River and its distributary the Akhtuba. It is 20 kilometers (12 mi) northeast of Volgograd. Population: 314,255 (2010 Census);[1] 313,169 (2002 Census);[4] 268,842 (1989 Census).[5]

History

Volzhsky was founded in 1951. It had around 10,000 people at the time. It was given city status in 1954. The main reason for its large growth was the making of the Volga Hydroelectric Station.
