Yates Center, Kansas
Yates Center is a city in Woodson County, Kansas, United States.[4] It is also the county seat of Woodson County. In 2020, 1,352 people lived there.[3]

History
Yates Center was created in August 1875. It was named for Abner Yates, the original owner of the town site. She donated an entire block around the courthouse, land for the churches, a city park, and a lot each for the first two children born in the town.[5][6] Yates Center is the only town in Kansas to be chosen as a county seat before there was a house or person in its boundaries.[6]
More than thirty buildings in downtown Yates Center are included in the Yates Center Courthouse Square Historic District.[7]
Geography
Yates Center is at 37°52′48″N 95°44′4″W / 37.88000°N 95.73444°W (37.879948, -95.734522).[8] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 2.96 square miles (7.67 km2). Of that, 2.53 square miles (6.55 km2) is land and 0.43 square miles (1.11 km2) is water.[2]

2020 census
The 2020 census says that there were 1,352 people, 590 households, and 327 families living in Yates Center. Of the households, 73.4% owned their home and 26.6% rented their home.
The median age was 44.5 years. Of the people, 92.8% were White, 0.6% were Native American, 0.5% were Black, 0.5% were from some other race, and 5.6% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.8% of the people.[3][9]
2010 census
The 2010 census says that there were 1,417 people, 664 households, and 347 families living in Yates Center.[10]
Education
Yates Center is served by USD 366 Woodson School District.[11]
