Amy Madigan
Amy Marie Madigan (born September 11, 1950)[1] is an American television and movie actress. She has acted in many notable movies and TV series. These include the 1989 movie Field of Dreams and Uncle Buck and the series Grey's Anatomy, Carnivàle and Fringe. In 2025, Madigan became well known again for her role as Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger's horror movie Weapons. For this role, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
Career
In 1984, Madigan played McCoy in the movie Streets of Fire, and had a supporting role as Viola Kelsey in Places in the Heart. In 1985, she starred in the television movie The Laundromat. In 1985, she played Sunny Mackenzie-Sobel, a woman in a difficult marriage, in Twice in a Lifetime. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award.
In 2025, she played the villain role of Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger's horror mystery movie Weapons.[2] Madigan's role in Weapons received strong positive reviews. For this role, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics' Choice Movie Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award. On March 15, 2026, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The 40-year space between this nomination and her last nomination for Twice in a Lifetime is the longest gap between Oscar nominations for an actress.[3][4]
Personal life
Madigan was born in Chicago, Illinois.[1] She studied at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she earned a B.A. degree in philosophy in 1972.[5][6] She moved to Los Angeles in 1974.[7]
Madigan married the actor Ed Harris in 1983. They have one daughter, Lily Dolores, born in 1993.
