History

When the Indre-et-Loire department was created on 1800, the arrondissement of Tours was part of that original department.[1]

Geography

The arrondissement of Tours is the northern half of the Indre-et-Loire department. It is bordered to the north and east by the Loir-et-Cher department, to the southeast by the Loches arrondissement, to the southwest by the Chinon arrondissement, to the west by the Maine-et-Loire department and to the northwest by the Sarthe department.

The arrondissement of Tours is the largest arrondissement of the department in area, 2,629.2 square kilometres (1,015.1 square miles), and the one with more people living in it with 466,232 inhabitants.[2]
