Ciudad del Este

Ciudad del Este (Spanish for City of the East) is the second largest city in Paraguay and capital of the Alto Paraná Department, on the Paraná River.

History

Founded in 1957, it was first called Puerto Flor de Lis, then Puerto Presidente Stroessner, after Alfredo Stroessner. In 1989, its name was changed to Ciudad del Este.

Geography

Ciudad del Este is in southeastern Paraguay, in the Oriental region. The district area is 151.04 km2 (58 sq mi) and an estimated population in 2015 of 290,912 for a population density of 1,926.1 inhabitants/km2.[2]

Ciudad del Este is in front of the Brazilian city of Foz do Iguaçu (state of Paraná), separated from it by Paraná River and linked by the "Friendship Bridge". The Argentine border is between the neighbouring town of Presidente Franco and Puerto Iguazú (Misiones Province). Ciudad del Este, along with the towns and districts of Hernandarias, Minga Guazú and Presidente Franco, forms an area named Gran Ciudad del Este ("Greater Ciudad del Este").
