Evin Prison
Evin Prison is Iran's most notorious prison. It is in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains above Tehran. Some of Iran’s most respected activists and lawyers are serving time in this prison.[1]
The prison started in 1971 during the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi as a place for political prisoners. At the time, there was space for 320 prisoners. Since the 1979 revolution, the prison has 15,000 prisoners. The prison has a reputation for brutality and torture.[2] It is believed that many people died in this prison from torture.[3]
