Evin Prison
Evin Prison is Iran's most notorious prison. It is in the foothills of the Alborz Mountains above Tehran. Some of Iran’s most respected activists and lawyers are imprisoned at Evin.[1]
The prison opened in 1971 to hold political prisoners during the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. The building has space for 320 prisoners. Since the 1979 revolution, it has had 15,000 prisoners.[source?]
The prison has a reputation for brutality and torture.[2] It is believed[by whom?] that many people died in this prison from torture.[3]
