Fukuoka (福岡市 Fukuoka-shi ) is a Japanese city in Fukuoka Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.[1] It is the capital city of the prefecture.[2]
It has been recognized as a city designated by government ordinance since 1992.[3]
History
Hakata Bay and the Fukuoka area was the landing site of the Mongol invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281.[1]
Fukuoka is known for its football team, Avispa Fukuoka; and it is also known for its baseball team, the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks.
Geography
Fukuoka is on the northwest coast of Kyushu.[1] It is about the same distance from Tokyo as it is from Shanghai or Seoul.[4]
Fukuoka City is divided into 7 wards.
