Nielsen grew up in the Oslo suburb of Oppsal. He began his career with the local club, Oppsal IF. In 2007 he played for Vålerenga Oslo. On 5 October 2009 he played his first match in the Norwegian Premier League against Viking. He was the youngest ever Vålerenga player. In January 2011, he signed a three-year professional contract with Vålerenga.[1]
By the age of 18, Nielsen was an experienced player. On 11 July 2012, he scored his first hat-trick for Vålerenga in the match against Odd Grenland.
In July 2012 he signed with Red Bull Salzburg together with his friend Valon Berisha. In Salzburg he scored a hat-trick in the match against Admira Wacker Mödling during a 4-4 draw.[2] In the following matches he often played only as substitute. After only a few matches he went to Eintracht Braunschweig on loan.
