History

The City of Jewell started in 1870. It was a big sod area called Fort Jewell. It was named after Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis R. Jewell.[4]

The first post office in Jewell was created in July 1870.[5]

Jewel was incorporated as a city in 1880.[6]

Jewell was on the Missouri Pacific Railroad.[7]

Geography

Jewell is at 39°40′15″N 98°9′10″W / 39.67083°N 98.15278°W / 39.67083; -98.15278 (39.670941, -98.152795).[8] The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.41 square miles (1.06 km2). All of it is land.[2]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 370 people, 175 households, and 90 families living in Jewell. Of the households, 76.0% owned their home and 24.0% rented their home.

The median age was 47.7 years. Of the people, 92.4% were White, 0.5% were Native American, 0.5% were Black, 0.8% were from some other race, and 5.7% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.4% of the people.[3][9]

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 432 people, 208 households, and 113 families living in Jewell.[10]
