Lakin, Kansas

Lakin is a city in Kearny County, Kansas, United States.[4] It is also the county seat of Kearny County. In 2020, 2,205 people lived there.[3]

History

Lakin was created in 1874.[5] It was named after David Long Lakin, the former treasurer of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.[6][7]

A post office in Lakin was built in March 1874.[8] In 1888, Lakin was chosen to be the county seat.[9]

Geography

The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.95 square miles (2.46 km2). All of it is land.[10]

2020 census

The 2020 census says that there were 2,205 people, 796 households, and 555 families living in Lakin. Of the households, 68.8% owned their home and 31.2% rented their home.

The median age was 34.8 years. Of the people, 64.0% were White, 1.2% were Black, 0.8% were Native American, 0.2% were Asian, 11.0% were from some other race, and 22.8% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 37.0% of the people.[3][12]

2010 census

The 2010 census says that there were 2,216 people, 781 households, and 573 families living in Lakin.[13]
