Saurashtra

Saurashtra, also known as Kathiawar, is a region in the Indian state of Gujarat.[1][2][3] This region covers the area of seven districts, including Rajkot, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Bhavnagar, Surendarnagar, and Amreli.[4][2] It covers an area of 34,338 square kilometers, which is one-third of Gujarat's total land.[5]

Languages

The most spoken language in the region is Gujarati.[3]

Population

According to the 1991 census, the total population of the Saurashtra region was noted as 11,190,518 people.[5]

Occupation

Fishing is a primary occupation among the locals.[3] It is also famous for cattle herding and farming.[3] Along with North Gujarat, the Saurashtra region is also known for its spice production.[6]

Educational institutes

The Junagadh Agricultural University is an important government educational institute in the Saurashtra region.[6]

Religious sites

The Somnath temple is an old and historic Hindu temple in the Saurashtra that is dedicated to the Lord Shiva.[2]
