The movie follows a series of severe weather events that take place around the world as a result of global warming. Among these events:
- Japan is hit by a large hail storm.
- Los Angeles is hit by tornadoes.
- New Delhi is hit by a blizzard.
- New York is hit by a very strong thunderstorm that causes a large storm surge. Later, the storm turns into a blizzard. The storm has a hurricane-like eye with cold air that instantly freezes anything it comes in contact with.
These events cause global cooling, which eventually starts a new ice age.
The movie made $186.8 million in North America and Canada, and $552.6 million worldwide. It was inspired by the book The Coming Global Superstorm, co-authored by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.
