"The Waiting" is a 1981 song by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and is the lead single from their fourth studio album Hard Promises. It went to number 6 in Canada, number 19 in the United States and number 27 in New Zealand. It was covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1995.
