Yasunari Kawabata[1] (14 June 1899–16 April 1972) was a Japanese writer. He was the winner of the 1968 Nobel Prize in Literature.[2] He was the first Japanese author to receive the award.

Hatsuyo Itō (1906-1951), to whom Kawabata was briefly engaged in 1921. She was the unrequited love of his life and may have influenced some of his works.
