Arrondissement of Tarbes

The arrondissement of Tarbes is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region. Its capital, and of the department, is the city of Tarbes.

History

When the Hautes-Pyrénées department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Tarbes was part of that original department and was made the capital (préfecture) of it.[1]

Geography

It is the most northern of the arrondissements of the department, with an area of 1,488.1 square kilometres (575 square miles),[2] the second in area of the department. It is the most populated arrondissement with 143,753 inhabitants and a population density of 96.6 inhabitants/km².[3]

The arrondissement of Tarbes is bordered to the north by the Gers department, to the east by the Haute-Garonne department, to the south arrondissement of Bagnères-de-Bigorre, to the southwest by the arrondissement of Argelès-Gazost and to west by the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.
