Rua XV de Novembro

Rua XV de Novembro (Portuguese for "15 November Street") is one of the major streets in downtown Curitiba. It is also known as Rua das Flores ("Flower Street"), because of the many pots with flowers decorating the street. In 1972, it was closed to vehicles, and only people are allowed in it, making it one of the first pedestrian streets (streets for people) in Brazil. This change of the street, was one of the first projects of the mayor of Curitiba, Jaime Lerner, who was an urban planner. It is a major tourist site in Curitiba. The street has many restaurants and shops and many historic buildings. It is named for the Proclamation of the Republic, which took place on November 15, 1889, which ended the Empire of Brazil, and made Brazil a republic.

It is very common to see every kind of artistic performances, such as mimes and clowns who interact with those who pass by, musicians, magicians and other performers, such as living statues (people who act like statues).
