Samuel J. Tilden
Samuel Jones Tilden (February 19, 1814 – August 14, 1886) was the candidate for U.S. president of the Democratic Party in 1876; he narrowly lost to Rutherford B. Hayes, the Republican Party's candidate, in one of the country's most dispiuted, closest-run, and violent elections. Tilden was also the governor of New York from January 1, 1875 to December 31, 1876.
