San José de Ocoa

The Dominican city of San José de Ocoa is the head municipality of the San José de Ocoa province, on the southern part of the country and close to the Ocoa river.

Name

Ocoa is the name of the river that crosses the province; it is a Taíno word that means "a place with many mountains".[3]

The old name of the town was El Maniel.

Population

The city had, in 2010, a total population of 25,710: 12,819 men and 12,891 women. The urban population was 87.1% of the total population.[1]

Geography

San José de Ocoa has a total area of 82.4 km2 (32 sq mi), about 9.7% of the total area of the province of San José de Ocoa.[1] The city is an elevation of 475 m (1,558 ft),[2] and at 115 km (71 mi) to the northwest of Santo Domingo.

San José de Ocoa is on the southern side of the Cordillera Central ("Central mountain range"). The city is along the Ocoa river.

The municipality of San José de Ocoa has the Azua province to the west, the Peravia province to the south, the municipality of Sabana Larga to the north, the municipality of Rancho Arriba to the northwest and the San Cristóbal province to the west.

Climate

San José de Ocoa has a tropical wet and dry/savanna climate (Köppen-Geiger classification: Aw) with a pronounced dry season in winter.[4]

The average amount of rainfall for the year in the city is 894.6 mm (35.2 in). The month with the most precipitation on average is May with 151.4 mm (6.0 in) of rainfall, followed by September with 135.6 mm (5.3 in).

The driest season is winter. The month with the least rainfall on average is January with an average of 15.9 mm (0.6 in) and the second is February with 24.8 mm (1.0 in).

San José de Ocoa is in a warm region; the average temperature for the year is 24.5 °C (76.1 °F). The warmest month, on average, is August with an average temperature of 25.95 °C (78.7 °F). The coolest month on average is January, with an average temperature of 23.15 °C (73.7 °F).

Economy

The main economic activity of the municipality is farming; the main products are coffee, beans and potato. Other vegetable, as cabbage and carrot are also grown as well as some tropical fruits (avocado and mango).
