Development of Spider-Man 3 began immediately after the successful release of Spider-Man 2, planned for a 2007 release. During pre-production, Raimi originally wanted another villain to be included along with Sandman. At the request of producer Avi Arad, he added Venom. The producers also requested the addition of Gwen Stacy. Principal photography for the film began in January 2006, and took place in Los Angeles and Cleveland before moving to New York City from May to July 2006, and the film was completed in October.

During post-production, Sony Pictures Imageworks created over 900 visual effect shots. With an estimated production budget of $258–350 million, it was the most expensive film ever made at the time of its release.

Spider-Man 3 premiered on April 16, 2007, in Tokyo, and was released in the United States in both conventional and IMAX theaters on May 4, 2007. The film grossed $890.9 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the trilogy, the third-highest-grossing film of 2007, and was the highest-grossing Spider-Man film until it was surpassed by Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019. Unlike the previous movies, Spider-Man 3 received a mixed reception from critics, who praised the acting, CGI, and action sequences, but criticized the confusing storylines and the number of villains. Most of these were later blamed on studio interferences and disputes between Sony, Raimi and Arad.

A fourth installment, titled Spider-Man 4, was set to be released on May 6, 2011, followed by a Venom spin-off film, but was canceled due to Sam Raimi quitting, because of creative differences with the writers and producers. The Spider-Man film series was rebooted twice; first with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield; and later a new film series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Jon Watts and starring Tom Holland, beginning with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). The Venom spin-off was revived in 2016 by Sony and was finally released in 2018 with Venom, set within Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters and directed by Ruben Fleischer, while starring Tom Hardy.

Plot

Several months after Otto Octavius' sacrifice, Peter Parker plans to propose to Mary Jane Watson, who has just made her Broadway musical debut. A meteor lands at Central Park, and an alien symbiote follows Peter to his apartment by latching on to his motorbike after he and Mary Jane leave after stargazing. Harry Osborn, seeking revenge for his father's death and having taking gas that makes him stronger, attacks Peter with his father's Green Goblin technology, but the battle ends when Harry takes a bad fall, losing his memory of Peter being Spider-Man.

Meanwhile, police pursue an escaped prisoner named Flint Marko, who visits his wife and sick daughter before leaving again. He later falls into a particle accelerator that merges his body with the pit of sand he was in, transforming him into the Sandman, giving him the power of controling sand and changing his body with it.

During a parade honoring Spider-Man for saving Gwen Stacy's life, Peter kisses her, angering Mary Jane. Meanwhile, Sandman robs an armored truck, and easily defeats Spider-Man, before escaping. NYPD Captain George Stacy, Gwen's father, informs Peter and his Aunt May that Flint Marko was Uncle Ben's true killer. Dennis Carradine, the man who Peter thought did it, was only Flint Marko's accomplice.

At his apartment, while Peter sleeps in his Spider-Man suit while waiting for Sandman. Coming out of hiding, the symbiote covers the suit, and Peter later wakes up at the top of a building, discovering that his costume has changed to black and he has become more powerful. Spider-Man tracks Sandman and battles him in a subway tunnel. Discovering that water Sandman's weakness, he tears open a pipe, releasing water that reduces Sandman to mud and washes him away. Spider-Man assumes that Sandman is dead.

Peter's changed personality pushes away Mary Jane, who is struggling in her career because of her acting roles receiving negative reviews from critics. She shares a tender moment with Harry, but leaves afterward in regret. Harry recovers from his injury, and remembers that Peter is Spider-Man. Urged by a vision of his father, Harry forces Mary Jane into breaking up with Peter. After Mary Jane tells Peter she loves "somebody else," Harry meets with Peter and lies, claiming to be that person. Later, Peter attacks Harry in his apartment and after beating him, spitefully tells Harry that his father never loved him. As Peter leaves, Harry throws a pumpkin bomb after Peter, but he throws it back, burning and scarring Harry's face.

At the Daily Bugle, Peter discovers that his rival photographer Eddie Brock has been making fake photographs of Spider-Man committing crimes. He confronts Eddie about this and hands over the evidence to the Bugle. J. Jonah Jameson fires Eddie and hires Peter to become a staff photographer. Later that night, Peter brings Gwen to a jazz club, where Mary Jane now works. Peter passionately dances with Gwen in front of Mary Jane, trying to make her jealous. Realizing this, Gwen apologizes to Mary Jane and leaves. After assaulting the bouncers and accidentally hitting Mary Jane, Peter finally realizes that the symbiote is corrupting him. Making his way to a church's bell tower, Peter realises high-pitched sounds weaken the creature. He removes the symbiote, and it soon bonds with Eddie, transforming him into Venom. Venom meets Sandman, who survived his battle with Spider-Man, and convinces him to join forces to defeat Spider-Man once and for all.

Venom kidnaps Mary Jane and holds her hostage from a web, high above a construction site, while Sandman keeps the police from rescuing her. After Harry refuses to help Peter, he finally learns the truth about his father's death from his butler, Bernard. Peter puts on his red and blue costume one more time and heads out to rescue Mary Jane, as the watching audience claps. He battles Venom and Sandman, but is almost killed before Harry arrives to help him with his Green Goblin technology and helps save Mary Jane. Venkm attempts to stab Peter with Harry's glider, but Harry jumps between them and is stabbed himself. Peter, remembering the symbiote's weakness, creates a circle of metal pipes to hit, creating loud sounds and weakening Venom. Peter separats Eddie from the symbiote, and activates a pumpkin bomb from Harry's glider, throwing it at the symbiote. However, Eddie, who has become addicted to the alien, attempts to save it, but ends up vaporized along with the symbiote in the explosion.

Afterward, Sandman explains that Uncle Ben's death was an accident that has haunted him ever since. Peter forgives Flint, allowing him to escape. Harry and Peter reconcile before Harry dies from his injuries. Sometime after Harry's funeral, Peter and Mary Jane reconcile and share a tender dance at the jazz club.
